Cupcakes are so 2017, bring on the Doughnuts!
New Yorkers love their doughnuts and if you’re a local or visiting New York, you absolutely must try them here and soon, because they’re selling like hot cakes. I buy a 6 pack every day for my New York to Washington DC train journey.
Every first Friday of the month June is considered National Doughnut Day all over the country. On that particular Friday in 1983, The Salvation Army honoured everyone who served doughnuts to the soldiers fighting World War 1. As historic as the doughnut is, it is also pretty darn delicious.
Here’s a list of places where you will find some of the best doughnuts in New York City:
1. Du’s Donuts
Du’s Donuts serves New England-style cake doughnuts that are certainly to die for. You might want to try the classics like the apple cinnamon, caramel chocolate brownie and cherry pie but also go for the chef’s crazy flavour combinations like grapefruit chamomile, oatmeal chai and ginger matcha!
2. Daily Provisions
Don’t be fooled by the smallness of this daytime cafe, Daily Provisions serve up the (rumoured to be) best old-fashioned crullers in all of New York City. The dough is actually made of a French recipe, one involving more eggs and less yeast, to give you a lighter and fluffier doughnut tasting like its main component – sugar, maple or cinnamon. If you do find this tempting be there before 10 AM, these sell out quick!
3. Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery
This bakery cannot really be classified as a bonafide doughnut shop because it’s as loyal to delicate butter shortbreads as it is to loaded-with-cream chop pastries. The doughnut to definitely try is their super soft fried brioche dipped in caster sugar, filled with vanilla cream. Oh yum! If you’ve ever wondered what happens to the dough in the centre, this little number is topped with it!
