New York City is a global Mecca of shopping but is also one of the most carne-loving cities in the country. The one area the city is exceptional at is cooking meat, especially steaks. Yes, with so many steakhouses and steak restaurants serving dry-aged and rare goodness in classic to experimental styles. If you’ve not had steaks in New York City, you have another reason to come back to the Big Apple.
Whether it’s old-timey houses, rich in history with dark-wood tables and black and white celebrity photos or new-age glitzy steak joints that fuse the usual steak with unusual flavours, or hip joints where you literally pay through your nose only to find yourself seated next to somebody super famous, the steakhouse is an experience not to be missed.
Here’s a list of the city’s best steakhouses:
1. Quality Meats
57 W 58th St, New York, NY 10019, USA
If you could just think of a place dedicated to the art of butchery, minus the smell, you’d probably be imagining Quality Meats. This uber-stylish industrial space embellished with meat hook light fixtures, butcher blocks, white tiles and brick walls serves a classic steak with a revamped set of sides.
2. Wolfgang’s Steakhouse
250 W 41st St, New York, NY 10036, USA
This place was opened by Wolfgang Zwiener, a waiter at Peter Luger in 2004. It’s always risky trying to recreate someone else’s work but Wolfgang succeeded and now owns one of the best and most upscale steakhouses in town. Blackened to no end the steaks are still juicy, tender and flavourful.
3. Famous Sammy’s
157 Chrystie St, New York, NY 10002, USA
This pricy little Jewish gem is everything you’d see at a bar mitzvah, apart from the rates. Yiddish song sung by the customers and servers alike, folk dancing and vodka shots are a common sight here. The menu is loaded with Eastern European delights like saline chicken liver, beef tenderloins and garlic karnatzlach sausages!
