Fall is the perfect time to make a quick escape from the city: right when the summer heat has escaped and before the cold returns.
There is no doubt that NYC is charming during the autumn, but who would pass up a chance for a quick weekend getaway? Here’s three awesomes to do just that, all an OurBus ride away.
- Take in the beauty of Ithaca’s Gorges: Ideal for the nature lovers, Ithaca’s gorges and waterfalls, tucked amidst the fall foliage are serene and beautiful. Many of these falls are flanked by hiking and biking trails too. The region is dotted with numerous state parks, and amongst them, Taughannock Falls State Park boasts a 215 foot plunging waterfall. (Yes, higher than Niagara Falls!) Cornell University has its own Triphammer Falls, and these are only two of over 150 in the region! Ithaca is only a bus journey away from NYC, and is the perfect place to make a fall getaway.
- Catch a State College Football Game: For football fanatics, there’s only one thing to do, and that’s make your way to State College, PA for any one (or all) of the football matches taking place this season. Watch the Penn State Nittany Lions play their rivals Michigan State, Ohio State and Maryland at Beaver Stadium this fall. State College is a less than 5 hour bus ride direct from NYC, making it ideal for a quick break. You can find the game schedule here:
- Enjoy the art scene in Lancaster, PA: You might not know it, but Lancaster is a nationally recognized hub of art and artists. It boasts many art galleries that one can stroll through to admire works that range from the more classical to the contemporary. Gallery Row is the center of activity, and is lined with historic shops and studios, but there are many more tucked away in neighbouring streets.
Most galleries don’t charge an entrance fee (check out the Red Raven Art Company and Liz Hess Gallery, which are only two of many). For those who’d rather make the art themselves (hey, some of us aren’t half bad!) you can head to a place like Zole Art Factory for one of the canvas painting classes.
